Welcome to Shiatsu
The Zen Centre Shiatsu/ Massage clinic:
A mindful and holistic practice that assists the body’s innate ability to heal.
What is Shiatsu:
Shiatsu literally translated means “finger pressure” . The thumb specifically is utilised to apply pressure to specific points/zones on the body, that are experiencing pain, from physical strain, inflammation, stress, anxiety and fatigue.
How is Shiatsu applied:
Pressure application is fairly deep and even, with a releasing effect. This encourages the flow of blood and lymphatic fluid, alleviating the pressure on surrounding nerves. This is essential for the healing process of the physical body as the build up of lactic acid and toxins are filtered through the lymph nodes and eliminated from the body.
To assist the flow of lymphatic fluid various massage techniques are utilised.

The origin of Shiatsu
The underlying principles of Shiatsu date back approximately 2000 years and are based on the flow of energy/ Qi (Chi), that flows through the invisible pathways of the body known as meridians. Although the roots of Shiatsu date back to China, the principles have been adapted in Japan over the centuries and modern Shiatsu emerged in the early 20th century influenced mainly by Takujiro Namikoshi (1905 – 2000), a man who as a young boy began working on his mother’s arthritis by applying pressure with his thumb and fingers. He later structured the techniques and opened a school of Shiatsu, but his approach emphasised the anatomy and physiology alongside traditional concepts
The Zen Centre Shiatsu/ massage clinic follow the principals and applications of Takujiro Namikoshi.
Zen is not some fancy, special art of living.
Our teaching is just to live, always in reality, in its exact sense.
