Welcome to Okinawan Kobudo

Okinawan Kobudō is the traditional practice of martial arts using weapons such as the bō (long staff), tonfa and nunchaku. These weapons have deep roots in Okinawan history, as farming implements that were adapted to weapons of self defence, during the time of the Samurai where weapons were restricted for the “Common Folk”.

Their practice today offers much more than the study of traditional martial techniques as weapons of survival.

Kobudo Classes

At the Zen Centre tuition is available in the following 3 weapons:

  • The Bo (Long staff)
  • The Tonfa
  • The Nunchaka

Mindfulness in motion

Kobudo is a practice of mind, body and precise technical movement.

Through repetition, precision and disciplined practice, the practitioner develops focus, coordination, balance, timing and control. Each movement requires awareness of posture, breathing, positioning and the movement of the weapon. Through concentrated and disciplined practice, the mind and body merge in the present moment for defence or striking purpose

The effectiveness of each weapon comes not from the weapon itself, but from the skill, discipline and awareness developed through practice.

Ultimately, the practice of Kobudo is more than learning to handle a weapon.

It is about learning to focus, remain calm under pressure, develop discipline, move with intention and become fully present in the moment.

Kobudo is mindfulness in motion, where traditional martial practice becomes a pathway to awareness, discipline and self-mastery.

#thezencentre

Zen is not some fancy, special art of living. Our teaching is just to live, always in reality, in its exact sense.
